Domestic abuse is the issue, not guns!
Updated: May 29
The hottest news story today is the tragic murder of Jennifer Petelczyc and her 18-year-old daughter Gretl who were gunned down in their own home by Mark Bombara, before he turned the gun on himself. Jennifer was the best friend of Murderer Mark's wife who had discussed Mark and his guns with the police on numerous occasions. It is assumed that Murderer Mark couldn't find his wife and daughter so killed her best friend and her kid instead.
Everyone is up in arms that, former domestic violence champion - Murderer Mark, was legally allowed to own 13 licensed guns.
The dumb kids from school that couldn't get into university (WA Police) have gotten together and come up with a solution. The solution, to limit the number of guns people can own to 10. That's right!
The WA Firearm Act review would see recreational shooters limited to owning 5 guns, farmers restricted to 10 and competitive shooters limited to 10.
I nearly fell off my chair hearing this on ABC NEWS.
Surely, I'm not the first person to highlight that Murderer Mark utilised 2 guns for his Murder? This means that limiting the number of guns Murderer of Mark could legally own would make no difference to the shocking events that occurred resulting in the unfortunate and tragic loss of life.
According to the ABC WA Farmers CEO Trevor Whittington said the 10-weapon limit was acceptable.
"I find it a bit strange that you'd put a cap on firearms, whether it's one or five or 10 or 20, but at the end of the day, we can live with 10."
I'm with Trevor.
It will make no bloody difference limiting the number of gun licences to 10. Murderers don't tend to use all of their guns when they go rogue and commit senseless crime. They tend to use one, maybe two.
I think we need some university educated folk in the police force so that, instead of coming up with rubbish "shot gun" solutions, they address the issue of domestic violence and the fact that every 20 minutes Police are called to a situation where women's lives are being threated.
Women have put up with this same statistic for decades. Whilst we still don't have enough women in power, surely educated sisters in top jobs can start to dissect this problem of domestic violence, and make the male majority listen to them. It's too important.
Women are too content with equality as it is, unfortunately there is still a long way to go before women are truly equal to their male counterparts. Those in top jobs need to lead the fight rather than enjoy the example they set for other women. Girls aren't equal in Australia, sadly it's just not the case. Domestic violence numbers are testament to this point.
If Victoria Police were my client, I would be pitching a partnership with a nightly NEWS service. My idea is to call out the number of domestic violence situations women have suffered every single night, let's pretend for a second it's a statistic we care about. Let's care about domestic violence as much as we cared about COVID. Maybe that will bring the nation's awareness to where it needs to be.
Sadly, the risk is, misogynistic men will see the numbers as a score board. Misogynistic Matt will likely say to Woman Hate Hater "Nice one Harry, we got another 67 bitches today". Unfortunately, that's a legitimate concern which says everything about the state of equality in Australia today.
I still believe a nightly count on Channel 9 NEWS will help raise mainstream awareness.
We shouldn't be surprised by the tragic end to Jennifer and Gretl. We should be expecting it. We are doing nothing about the core problem, domestic violence.
I don't see any other good ideas on the table. Let's give my domestic violence, COVID countdown NEWS idea a try. We might see a shift... Maybe.
