Why don’t we consider the domestic violence situation as important as COVID?
Updated: Jul 5
Let's care about domestic violence as much as we cared about COVID. Maybe that will bring the nation's awareness to where it needs to be.
Instead of coming up with rubbish "shot gun" solutions like limiting the number of gun licences from 13 to 10 as was the case post brutal murder of Jennifer Petelczyc and her 18-year-old daughter Gretl who were gunned down in their own home by Mark Bombara. We must address the issue of domestic violence and the fact that every 20 minutes Police are called to a situation where women's lives are being threated.
Let’s call out the number of domestic violence situations every night on the news. Let’s keep a tally for a month. Let’s make sure all of Australia understand that this is a crisis and maybe women being abused might feel ok to talk about it. Who knows, lives could be saved.
Women have put up with this same statistic for decades. Whilst we still don't have enough women in power, surely educated sisters in top jobs can start to dissect this problem of domestic violence, and make the male majority listen to them. It's too important.
Women are too content with equality as it is, unfortunately there is still a long way to go before women are truly equal to their male counterparts. Those in top jobs need to lead the fight rather than enjoy the example they set for other women. Girls aren't equal in Australia, sadly it's just not the case. Domestic violence numbers are testament to this point.
Why don’t the cops partner with a nightly NEWS service. Why don’t we call out the number of domestic violence situations women have suffered every single night, every single night. Let’s educate Australia to the sheer number of situations, and if we pretend for a second it's a statistic we care about, maybe we will start to care.
Let's care about domestic violence as much as we cared about COVID. Maybe that will bring the nation's awareness to where it needs to be. We counted the number of COVID cases on every NEWS service in the country. It's all Australia could think about. A fraction of that kind of coverage would go a long way for domestic violence awareness. It's a no brainer.
Unfortunately, the risk is, misogynistic men will see the numbers as a score board. Misogynistic Matt will likely say to Woman Hate Hater "Nice one Harry, we got another 67 bitches today". For this to be a legitimate concern it says everything about the state of equality in Australia today.
A nightly count on a national news service (even a local one) will help raise mainstream awareness. It’s worth a try, lives are at stake.
